The Everlasting by Alix E. Harrow

book cover of 'The Everlasting' by Alix E. Harrow

“Let us lie here forever. Let us be buried as wild things are, by tooth and claw and worm. Let the grasses grow up through the sockets of our eyes. Let them find us in seven years or seventy, and let their brows furrow, because they cannot tell my bones from yours.”
― Alix E. Harrow, The Everlasting

The Everlasting by Alix E. Harrow is a genre-bending fantasy about a legendary knight and the historian who is forced to travel back in time to make sure her story unfolds as it is written and known throughout the world.

Sir Una Everlasting was Dominion’s greatest hero, but she came from nothing. Her legend helped build the nation of Dominion. The orphaned girl who became a knight was sent on many quests in her queen’s name, but eventually she died for her queen and country. Her story lives on in songs, books, recruiting posters, whatever type of propaganda the government needs. What about the real life of Sir Una Everlasting, outside of the spun legends and tales?

Flash forward centuries to Owen Mallory, a failed, cowardly soldier and a struggling, confused scholar. He has been in love with the tale of Una Everlasting since he was a boy. Owen has spent time researching her life throughout history by visiting libraries, archives, and scholars from around the world.

Imagine Owen’s surprise when he is thrust into the past after a life-changing meeting. He finds himself in Una’s world, tangled in her story, stuck repeating her history over and over whether he wants to or not. Every time the story ends the exact same way. Desperate to rewrite Una’s legend and to have a different ending, Una and Owen will have to find a way to rewrite history.

The Everlasting is a slow-burn, yearning piece of fantasy fiction. I absolutely adored this title. Blending time-travel, myths, and deep emotions, The Everlasting is a masterful, imaginative tale that flips the idea of legends and asks how history changes stories and truths change throughout time. It was sorrowful, tender, humorous, and incredibly bold.

This title is also available in large print.
