How did your reading go this month? Did you read something that featured lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or queer/questioning individuals? Share in the comments. In June, we celebrated LGBTQ culture and honored the movement for LGBTQ rights.

I read our main title: Hijab Butch Blues by Lamya H. This is the story of the coming-of-age of a queer hijabi Muslim immigrant. Through this memoir, readers will learn about the Quran alongside tales of Lamya’s life. From her childhood arrival in the United States for college to early adulthood living in New York City, Lamya wrestles with her triumphs and struggles by comparing them to stories from the Quran. Throughout every story, Lamya is searching for community and belonging, something that at the end of this book she believes she has found.
Hijab Butch Blues is an incredibly intimate memoir in essays. While uniquely queer and Muslim, this memoir relates the universal quest for love, trust, courage, and belonging. I absolutely adored this book – a solid five star read.
Next month, we will be reading about Disability Pride Month, recognizing people with disabilities, their culture, experiences, achievements, and the struggles of people with disabilities.
